600 percussionists come together to perform for Chingay 2020 which is held on 31 Jan & 1 Feb, 2020 at F1 Pit Building to celebrate People’s Association (PA)’s 60 years of bringing people together.
Chingay is one of Asia’s grandest street and floats parade that is held in Singapore annually to showcase Singapore’s exclusive multi-ethnic culture. Having different themes dedicated to each year, this year’s theme of Chingay 2020 is ‘Colour in Harmony’, along with different colours representing different communities.
Each segment focuses on showing their own colour respectively, but the finale has a mixture of all the colours.
Being the finale of the show, 600 energetic percussionists filled up the whole performing arena with each of them having a huge bamboo stick and drumstick in their hands. Bamboos were chosen because they symbolise strength, multiple bamboos sticking together will make the structure stronger and not being able to break easily. By knocking the drumstick against the bamboo and shout as one, the performers created a powerful and unifying rhythm, which represents the theme of the finale, ‘Strength in Unity”.
Relating back to the theme of this years Chingay parade, the bamboos are also in six different colours that represent different community values.

“The performance left me in awe,” said Teo Hui Qi, 16, a student from Fuhua Secondary School who had attended the NE Show on 18 Jan 2020. “They brought back the kampong spirit by shouting as one and in harmony”.
